Zero Punctuation: Super Smash Bros. Brawl

An honest review from Yahtzee on Super Smash Brothers Brawl. Nothing is held back...

Started to learn Zend

I have a couple of projects to do which involve fairly dissimilar functions but I thought it would be a good idea to use a framework rather than rely on my rather poor code. I have always been able to get my code to work but I am sure it was always open to SQL injections and ways around my validation but they did work and were never really put out in the wild with thousands of people to use.

But things have changed now, and I have 2 major projects to do with another in the pipeline.

Far Cry 2

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of a semi-private viewing of Far Cry 2 in action.  Unfortunately no camera's were allowed but there wasn't really much more to see than what it already on the Internet.  The demo that was shown was a November 2007 build.

Far Cry 2 is set in the savannah of Africa.  The Far Cry team has moved away from the jungle environment which we basically saw again in Crysis.  The weather is humid and green vegetation is rare in this vast openness.

Global Warming - Turn the heat up?

Ah...global warming.  You can't deny it is happening.  Hell, it's been happening for the last what, 14,000 years or so?  Is it really a bad thing?

One can only assume that as the last ice age ended and temperatures started to rise, life was able to flourish.  This mean a large incline of new creatures on the planet.  This means more resources are being used and more waste produced.  I am not even talking about humans here.  What about all the other animals that cover the planet.  All the methane and CO2 they produce would of been huge.  At the very most the industrial age would of only increased the acceleration of this global warming.

Is it a bad thing?

All you see on the news and media is how global warming is going to kill everyone and everything on the planet.  Is there actually any proof for this?  What happens when your fridge or freezer gets too much ice in it?  You defrost it.  It makes it a lot more efficient.  Perhaps the earth could be seen as a large fridge being defrosted to make the planets eco system more efficient.

You can't go on about the save the polarbear's crap.  They live there, that's their problem.  Mammoths used to live in the large sections of the earth covered in ice and are now extinct.  That is fair, they had large woolly coats on.  Once the planet warmed up they had no use for the wool and couldn't exactly pop in to a hair dressers.

Sea levels are supposed to be ever rising from the ice bergs melting.  You will always see dramatic images on the news of ice falling in to the water from giant icebergs.  Yes, that is what happens in the summer.  They aren't going to show you pictures from the winter are they?  Where it is a cold bitter white wilderness that hardly anything can survive in.  Turn the heat up a bit then the animals don't have to be lazy buggers and sleep all winter.  All we get is a few extra days of working to celebrate the birth of a fictional character from one of the biggest selling books of all time.

[FIX] UT3.exe - kernel32.dll - Unreal Tournament 3

If you are getting the following error message when you open Unreal Tournament 3 do the following steps which should stop the problem happening.

ut3.exe-error

If you do get this error, the first thing to do is to download and install the latest graphics drivers for your graphics card. I am assuming that you have checked the minimum specification of the game and your computer to make sure your PC can handle it.

Frustration

By far the most frustrating animated gif that has found it's way on to the net.

2008 Aston Martin DB9 - Coupe & Volante

These changes include a revised version of Aston Martin’s 6.0 litre V12 engine to deliver improved power and torque. Peak power of 470bhp (350kW) – increased by 20bhp (30Nm) - is now reached at 6,000rpm, resulting in a power to weight ratio of 267bhp per tonne (199kW/tonne) – an increase of 11bhp per tonne over the existing DB9.

Peak torque of 600Nm is delivered at 5,000rpm, providing even more accessible power for the driver, as well a greater performance feel overall. Accordingly, top speed is now 190mph (306km/h) and the benchmark 0-60mph time improves by 0.3 seconds for the Touchtronic transmission – which benefits from a new valve box and integrated transmission controls to achieve quicker gear shifts – to 4.6 seconds and by 0.1 seconds to 4.6 seconds for the manual gearbox.

The latest DB9 also incorporates a series of chassis developments for both the Coupe and Volante derivates. Bilstein dampers are introduced in addition to revised upper suspension arms and retuned suspension bushes to deliver improved ride quality; aiding greater refinement in the Volante and an enhanced sporting feel in the Coupe. The DB9 Volante also benefits from revisions to the front shear panel which increases torsional rigidity by 10%, further improving refinement.

Be There - I'll be there in 5 minutes when the page loads

UK ISP Be have been well known over recent years for a very good ISP. Owned by O2, Be offer up to 24MB Internet. Of course this varies depending on how far you are away from the exchange and the quality of the cable from the exchange to the household.

As of late, problems have been arising. They started off with disconnections that could last up to 6 hours. Often resynching at 50% the speed that it should be. This continued for a week. Of course, I didn't just stay quiet. I sent a ticket using Be's online ticketing system for members. I stated the problems that I had been having as well as a list of things I had tried, such as:

  • Unplugging all phones from the sockets.
  • Trying a different router.
  • Changing microfilter.

Also seeing in to the future, I stated that I had no BT test socket.

But none of this helped.

So what did Be recommend?
