There is a problem on all Mondeo’s from 2007 until early 2008 I believe which is after heavy rain when you open the boot, you get wet as does everything in the boot.

There is a fix for this and is on all current Mondeo’s been made. The fix is a rubber seal going all the way round the boot. All the water that sits at the bottom of the window now floods down the sides of the window and drops a short distance at the top of the boot and flows down the side gutters.

Unfortunately everyone who bought a Mondeo before this was fitted is in a situation where they are getting wet. This is a design flaw and as such should be fixed free of charge by Ford. But no. Ford seem very reluctant to do anything about it.

The problem is the rubber seal can’t be retro fitted. The part in question is a whole new rear windscreen. A brick through your rear windscreen would get your a new part at your expense.

All Ford Mondeo owners should phone Ford Customer Relation Centre on 0845 841 1111.

The dealers don’t care or want to know about the problem and the Ford CRC just want to push everyone to their dealer. Poor service from Ford especially as it was a problem on some of the hatchback Focus’ too.

On the Auto Trader website they give readers some tips on how to save money by washing their car themselves rather than paying a valet to do it for them. Unfortunately their guide is wrong and is likely to cause more damage to the paint.

The most glaring error is this:

5. Use car wax or polish to create the perfect sheen. Don’t worry if paint residue appears on the cloth – this is just a layer of ‘dead paint’

Whats the problem with this you say? Well:

Wax and polish are not the same.

Wax on a bad paint surface will not give you a perfect sheen.

Hand polishing will not give you a perfect sheet.

Paint residue on the ‘cloth’ shows that the car has no clear coat. There is no such thing as ‘dead paint’.

The bad bit of advice is the following:

What you’ll need

Car shampoo

A sponge

A bucket or hose

A leather chamois

Car wax or polish

Car Shampoo

Although correct a good shampoo will remove more dirt and give better lubrication for when washing to prevent the dirt from being rubbed on to the paint.

A Sponge

Unless it is a very high quality sponge, it shouldn’t touch your paintwork. And when I say high quality I mean something that you won’t be able to get from Halfords for 99p.

The better alternative is to use a Sheepskin Mitt. The sheepskin brings dirt in side, rather than leaving the dirt on the surface of the mitt like a sponge would.

An alternative to the sheepskin mitt is a Wash ShMitt.

A bucket or hose

Take out the or first of all. It is very helpful to have both. Secondly, get 2 buckets with grit guards.

The two bucket method

Fill one bucket with water and no shampoo. Fill the other with water and some shampoo.

Rinse the car with the hose, don’t use high pressure at 90degrees but a light spray at 30degrees over the whole of the car. Put on your mitt and dip in to the bucket with the shampoo, clean a section of thecar, rub the mitt on the grit guard of the water only bucket to get the dirt off the mitt. Squeeze the mitt to get the excess water in to the water only bucket. Follow this process emptying out the water only bucket as soon as it gets too dirty and get another fresh bucket. Once finished, rinse off again making sure to use a low pressure on the hose and a shallow angle.

A leather chamois

Leather chamois are not the best when it comes to drying your car. A high quality drying microfibre towel is the best option. Also when drying, don’t swipe across the car, lay the cloth out and pat dry it.

Recommended drying microfibre’s:

Sonus Der Wunder Drying Towel

Huge 38″ x 28″ Microfibre Drying Towel

Car wax or polish

This is wrong like I stated above. It’s good to have both, lets seperate them out.

Polish

I am going to focus on hand polishing as most people following the Auto Trader guide won’t want to buy a polisher to their car.

There are 2 types of polish, abrasive and filler.

Abrasive

Abrasive polishes actually remove paint/clearcoat when rubbed to remove scratches and swirls.

Recommended: Meguiars Scratch X, Car-Lack 68 – Hand polish kit and Sonus Hand Polish Bundle

Filler

Filler polishes fill swirls and scratches with polish to hide scratches and swirls.

Recommended: Autoglym Super Resin Polish and Bilt-Hamber Auto Balm

Wax

Putting a layer of wax on the car provides a level of protection to the car, from UV rays and bird shit.

One of the most talked about is Collinite No. 476S – Super Doublecoat Auto Wax. This wax is not only cheap but also very durable and provides a good shine. Applied thinly using a Foam Wax Applicatorand buffed off using a microfibre towel such as Ultimate Ultra-Plush Buffing Cloth or Eurow – Shag Pile Double Density Towels.

After running out of Carlack Wheel Cleaner which I found to be very good I decided to try a new product. I chose to buy some Valet Pro Bilberry Safe Wheel Cleaner. The label recommends that it should be diluted 1:1 for heavily soiled wheels and 5:1 for lightly soiled wheels.

I bought 2 bottles with chemical sprayers and made a 1:1 bottle and a 5:1 bottle.

With the Bilberry I also purchased a new brush which has been getting rave reviews on Detailing World and Clean Your Car to compliment my Vikan Wheel Brush. The new brush is called the EZ Detail Wheel Brush.

I didn’t get any before pictures, but it was a lot dirtier than it is in this picture:

After a spray of 5:1 diluted Bilbery, I left it to dwell for 2 minutes before scrubbing with the EZ Detail Brush. The only problem I found with the brush is that it gave a lot more spray back than the Vikan, although it did a much better job a lot quicker.

The wheel came out very clean and shiny without being polished or having a sealant applied to it.

I have also tried the 1:1 which was extremely effective, although I think you would easily be able to save money and get away with using just 5:1. If you regularly maintain your wheels in a weekly wash, you should be able to use the Bilberry 10:1.

At the weekend I had a go at cleaning my brothers Vauxhall Astra’s alloys.

This is what I was greeted with. A rather dirty alloy although not as dirty as a lot of the wheels you see on others cars.

The finish is a polished metal which are slightly kerbed but not too badly.

First a light spray of Carlack Wheel Cleaner. Which was worked in using a Vikan Wheel Brush. The wheels were then rinsed with water and given a quick dry using a Sonus Der Wunder drying microfibre cloth.

Then using an Ultimate Ultra-Plush Buffing Cloth I applied Meguiars NXT All Metal Polish working it in to the wheel. This was left for 15 minutes to dry before I buffed off using another Ultimate Ultra-Plush Buffing Cloth.

I then dressed the tyres using Chemical Guys New Look Trim Gel using an Induro-Brush #4 Tyre Dressing Applicator.

The finished product is this:

These changes include a revised version of Aston Martin’s 6.0 litre V12 engine to deliver improved power and torque. Peak power of 470bhp (350kW) – increased by 20bhp (30Nm) – is now reached at 6,000rpm, resulting in a power to weight ratio of 267bhp per tonne (199kW/tonne) – an increase of 11bhp per tonne over the existing DB9.

Peak torque of 600Nm is delivered at 5,000rpm, providing even more accessible power for the driver, as well a greater performance feel overall. Accordingly, top speed is now 190mph (306km/h) and the benchmark 0-60mph time improves by 0.3 seconds for the Touchtronic transmission – which benefits from a new valve box and integrated transmission controls to achieve quicker gear shifts – to 4.6 seconds and by 0.1 seconds to 4.6 seconds for the manual gearbox.

The latest DB9 also incorporates a series of chassis developments for both the Coupe and Volante derivates. Bilstein dampers are introduced in addition to revised upper suspension arms and retuned suspension bushes to deliver improved ride quality; aiding greater refinement in the Volante and an enhanced sporting feel in the Coupe. The DB9 Volante also benefits from revisions to the front shear panel which increases torsional rigidity by 10%, further improving refinement.

Audi is presenting a revolution in the top class – the first 12-cylinder diesel engine in a high-performance roadgoing sports car. The V12 TDI with a displacement of six liters powers a concept car based on the Audi R8. This unit generates a huge 500 hp and 1,000 Newton-meters (737.56 lb-ft) of torque. Audi is writing a new chapter in diesel technology with this power unit. Equipped with the expertise that Audi has built up through its motor sport activities, the R8 TDI Le Mans in Brilliant Red embodies superb road handling, pioneering technology and fascinating design.
The V12 TDI is closely related to the engine in the Audi R10, the two-time Le Mans winner – so it catapults the Audi R8 into supercar terrain concerning performance too. It sprints from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in just 4.2 seconds and its top speed is well over 300 km/h (186.41 mph). The peak torque, reached at only 1,750 rpm, paves the way for effortless acceleration that is unrivaled even at this level.

The Swabian, German tuners PPI Automotive Design GmbH, customize Audi’s flagship sportscar by stoking up the fire with even more coal going that extra mile by providing an enhanced look combined with improved driving dynamics. A wind tunnel-tested aerodynamic kit of carbon fibre in combination with a performance enhancement and special lightweight magnesium wheels in 19-inch dimensions provides measurably improved appearance whether on the race track or the elegant promenade of the elite jet set.

Two main novelties are at the heart of the new Maserati: the 440 HP V8 4.7 engine and the electro-actuated gearbox with fast MC-Shift arranged in the Transaxle layout typical of high-performance sports cars that represents the technological DNA of all Maseratis.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse offers the sport coupe customer an “attainable exotic” with striking design, sports car handling and dazzling performance. For 2009, Mitsubishi restyled the front and rear bumper fascias and gave the Eclipse GT model a large rear spoiler. The GT also gets three significant upgrades for 2009: a new dual exhaust system yields a more powerful sound while also boosting horsepower to 265 (up from 263); standard high intensity discharge (HID) head lamps sharpen front styling and aid nighttime visibility, and standard Active Stability Control (ASC) enhances driving safety and performance.

Three new colors are available: Maizen Blue pearl, Quick Silver metallic and Solar, a vibrant new yellow. New interior cloth fabrics give all models a richer interior feel and appearance. The optional Sun & Sound package for GS model now includes aluminum pedals.

In February 2008 the car will be unveiled at the Volvo Museum in Göteborg before setting off on a tour of the Nordic region and the USA.
1925-1926: The prototypes of what would eventually become the first Volvo slowly take shape in a simple workshop on the island of Hisingen in Göteborg on Sweden’s west coast. Volvo’s enthusiastic founders Assar Gabrielsson and Gustav Larson and their skilled craftsmen proceed with immense skill and precision. They design and engineer all the parts themselves. They test-drive and make changes in preparation for the next prototype. And in doing so they lay the very foundation for the excellent quality reputation that has been a Volvo trademark over the decades.

But if you are looking for an extremely comfortable car and have lots of money, then buy the CLS. Your arse will love you forever, until you spend a night on a beach in Brighton.
