An honest review from Yahtzee on Super Smash Brothers Brawl. Nothing is held back...

Far Cry 2

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of a semi-private viewing of Far Cry 2 in action.  Unfortunately no camera's were allowed but there wasn't really much more to see than what it already on the Internet.  The demo that was shown was a November 2007 build.

Far Cry 2 is set in the savannah of Africa.  The Far Cry team has moved away from the jungle environment which we basically saw again in Crysis.  The weather is humid and green vegetation is rare in this vast openness.

If you are getting the following error message when you open Unreal Tournament 3 do the following steps which should stop the problem happening.

If you do get this error, the first thing to do is to download and install the latest graphics drivers for your graphics card. I am assuming that you have checked the minimum specification of the game and your computer to make sure your PC can handle it.

Crysis - 32bit vs 64bit on Windows Vista x64

After finding out the performance of Crysis on a Windows Vista x64 machine running in x64 mode in DX10, I wondered about how much different it made over 32-bit.

Crysis Benchmark - DX10 Vista x64

Here are some benchmark results for a medium-high spec PC running Crysis on Microsoft Windows Vista x64.

The PC in question is the following specification:

  • Intel Core2Duo E6750 overclocked to 3.2GHz
  • 4GB DDR2 PC6400 RAM
  • 250GB SATA 7200RPM HDD
  • Nvidia 8800GTS 320MB overclocked to 560MHz core, 850MHz memory

This including case and PSU etc, excluding monitor and speakers can be bought for around £700-£750, which isn't really a lot, bringing it around £1000-£1200 with speakers and 22" widescreen monitor.

The benchmark was carried out on Windows Vista 64-bit edition in DirectX 10 mode.

The benchmark tool used was the Crysis Benchmark Tool made by the team at Crymod and can be downloaded from Crymod or Guru3D.

I finally received my copy of Unreal Tournament 3 today from Play.com after waiting years for it's release. And I must say I am impressed, more than I thought I would be.

Are current FPS trends ruining PC gaming?

With a large amount of first person shooters reaching stores around the world for the Winter sales, I can't help but think that the vast majority of the current fps games are generic and all feel roughly the same.  By genre they should be similar but they all seem to have that same soft of feel with none of the games really standing out because of it's gameplay.

Fifa 2008 - The woes continue

As well as the previous problems with Fifa 2008, the game continues to piss me off as I try to play it a bit more.

1

I tried, and that's that.  The game is not accurate at all and is inconsistent to say the least. The game seems to randomly decide whether players run through each other or tackle the other play, and when they do tackle the player there are only 2 outcomes.  One being the player tackling falls over leaving the attacking player with the ball through on goal, the other being the playing tackling wins the ball but doesn't control the ball because it would be too much to ask for him not to be a complete twat with 2 left feet.

Timeshift

Timeshift is a science fiction first person shooter for PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. The game has already been released for PC and Xbox but the release for Playstation 3 is scheduled for December.

Timeshift is not completely revolutionary but it is somewhat different to a lot of the generic FPS's that have been coming out recently.
