Enable Num Lock on startup

To enable Num Lock when you logon you need to edit a registry key.

Warning: Improper editing in the registry can cause Windows to become unbootable, make sure you know what you are doing.  Skeletorscorpse will not be held liable for any damage that is caused to your PC.

To turn on Num Lock we need to go in to the registry.  To go in to the registry click Start then Run.  In the Run dialogue box type regedit and press OK.  This will open the registry.

Navigate your way on the navigation tree to the following registry key:

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard\

Within the Keyboard key there should be a string called InitialKeyboardIndicators.  The possible values for this string are:

  • 0 = Num Lock is turned off once you login
  • 1 = Disable Num Lock
  • 2 = Num Lock is turned on once you login

Num Lock during system boot up

To enable Num Lock during the boot up sequence you will have to go in to the BIOS and enable.  Most motherboard BIOSs will have an option to enable Num Lock on boot up.  Once enabled Save and Exit the BIOS.
